Program Description
There’s
a new sound on the air and it’s emanating from a source deep in the hearts and
minds of Americans across the country. “LPFM: The People’s Choice”
chronicles the extraordinary story of a low power radio service that withstood
the rigors of Capitol Hill and special interest attacks. Today LPFM is
sending out a signal that is loud and clear. Freedom of speech has a new ally
and it’s LPFM.
A service initiated by former FCC Chairman William E. Kennard in January of
2000, LPFM is a low cost service designed to promote diversity and
localism and to encourage voices from the margins. Despite LPFM’s
promise, there have been powerful voices seeking to halt its presence.
“LPFM: The People’s Choice” includes interviews with former FCC Chairman
William E. Kennard; Executive Director of the Leadership Conference on Civil
Rights Wade Henderson; Media Advocates Andy Schwartzman, Michael Bracy and
Cheryl Leanza: Congressional Members Senator John McCain and Representative Ed
Markey; LPFM Organizers Pete Tridish, Andrea Cano, FCC Commissioner
Michael Copps; Former FCC Commissioner Gloria Tristani; and National Council of
Churches General Secretary Rev. Dr. Robert Edgar.
The program demonstrates how LPFM is making a difference in several
unique communities that are already broadcasting. From Florida to Maine,
California to Washington DC, and in the heartland, viewers will see LPFM
stations in action; hear stories of success, struggle and transformation; and
witness how what was just a dream has become a reality that gives new life to
declining communities, new strength to neighborhoods, and new voices in the
market place of ideas.
“LPFM: The People’s Choice” produced by the National Council of Churches,
is available to air on NBC owned and affiliated stations beginning September
26, 2004.
